asma Metrics Matters Archive

Journal of the Australian Software Metrics Association
Volume 1 1990 to Volume 17 2005

ASMA's 'metrics guy' from the 1990s

Welcome to the 'ASMA Metrics Matters Archive'. The archive has been compiled by CHARISMATEK Software Metrics.

Metrics Matters was a publication of the Australian Software Metrics Association (ASMA) from 1990 through to 2005.  It was circulated to ASMA members throughout Australia and beyond on a periodic basis. Over the years, Metrics Matters presented its readers with a wide range of articles from local and international experts in the areas of Software Metrics in general and Functional Size Measurement in particular.  Metrics Matters also contained important information on ASMA related meetings and events, and provided news and updates from different groups that had ASMA involvement.

This archive includes all editions of Metrics Matters from the first edition, Vol 1 No 1 March 1990, through to the final edition, Vol 17 No 2 September 2005.  The later editions, from 1998 through to 2005, were emailed to members as PDF files and hence are generally included as searchable documents.  The earlier editions, from 1990 through to 1997, were printed and mailed out to members as hard-copy documents.  Surviving copies of these early editions (along with a number of the later editions for which the PDF files could not be located) have been scanned in and the resultant images have been converted to PDF files.  These earlier scanned editions are therefore not searchable.

In the table below, the 'Featured Articles' column provides a reference to some of the longer articles to be found in each of the Metrics Matters editions. Readers are encouraged to scan through the full editions, however, as very often it is in the smaller articles, or within reports from ASMA monthly meetings or from the various ASMA working groups, that the truly significant and illuminating gems of knowledge are to be found. To make finding information in past editions of Metrics Matters easier and faster, you can choose to view just the table of contents pages - where they are available - as opposed to the full editions.

In September 2004 the NSW chapter of ASMA formally merged with Software Quality Assurance (NSW) and became known as ASMA/SQA (NSW). Whilst ASMA continued with Metrics Matters as a national publication, ASMA/SQA (NSW) also continued with its own newsletter, which from September 2004 was renamed as the ASMA/SQA (NSW) Newsletter. An archive of that newsletter is located on the QESP A/NZ website, www.qesp.org.au.

In June 2005 the ASMA national organisation was formally wound up, although one final edition of Metrics Matters was produced after that date under the ASMA/SQA (NSW) banner. Many of the other activities previously undertaken by ASMA were also taken over by ASMA/SQA (NSW). These included the organisation of the Australian Conference on Software Measurement (ACOSM) and Australia's membership of the International Software Benchmarking Standards Group (ISBSG). In 2008 ASMA/SQA (NSW) changed its name to Quantitative Enterprise Software Performance Australia / New Zealand (QESP A/NZ), www.qesp.org.au.
